Quickfire Q & As

Quickfire Q & As

I often get asked questions like these, so thought I would share so you can find out a bit more about me!

When did you start open water swimming?

I grew up by the sea so as a child swam a lot off the south coast but I took up open water swimming as part of a charity triathlon back in 2009.

Why open water swimming?

I realised it was my favourite element of triathlon, you don’t hear that very often, and just find it so good for my mental and physical health.

What scares you?

Changing room floors!!  I’m not worried about what’s in the water but you will always find me in flip flops once I am out of the water and I NEVER let my feet touch the floor in a changing room!

What’s the best thing about open water swimming?

Being outside in the elements with the freedom to think and be.

Are you competitive and focused at all times?

I’m only ever competitive with myself and never with others.  I might “use” someone else in an event or in the lane in the pool as a goal to overtake or close a gap but not to beat them; just to push myself a bit. I like to PB in events but only for progress; I’m not fast and I’m never going to win a medal!

What’s your longest swim to date?

In September 2017 I swam one-way Windermere which is 10.5 miles – it took me 6 hours and 35 minutes and I loved every minute.  I was lucky enough to be supported by Pete Kelly, Adventure Swim Director at Swim the Lakes.

So, what are your future swim plans?

In 2019 I have signed up for the Zwim 24 miles in 24 hours at Guildford Lido in April and then in September I’m heading back to Windermere to tackle the two-way swim of 21 miles supported by Swim the Lakes.

Are there any events you would recommend?

The Great Swim events series are brilliant; very welcoming of new comers and experienced swimmers alike and have events ranging from 1 mile to 10km – so something for everyone.

Favourite swimwear?

Anyone who follows me on Instagram @lakes_lidos_lanes will know that I am always going on about my Deakin and Blue swimming cossies – they are fabulous – stylish and practical and made from all sorts of recycled fishing nets.
